Activities for Families

The Hawke's Bay region presents a wide range of fun activities for children and families.

Every day, The Farm at Cape Kidnappers welcomes families of all sizes and ages. Jet-setting generations choose our lodge for the educational, interactive and destination inspired activities we offer family travellers.  Once on property, they delight in the convenience of having an attentive, family-friendly staff to curate their experiences.

We offer a children’s menu with classic favourites as well as our chef’s creations sourced from local farms. All of our suites are stocked daily with fresh baked cookies and brownies from our kitchen and fresh fruit is also served in-room daily.

We are happy to provide you with any and all of the little luxuries to make your stay with us as pleasant as possible, including babysitter services, toys, games, supplies and more.

Our accommodations are spacious and well suited for adding cribs or beds for our littlest guests as well as connecting suites and our four-bedroom Owner’s Cottage is a fantastic option for families with independence-seeking teens and tweens. Accommodations for nannies are also available.

We suggest that activity bookings are made with our lodge reservations team at the time of your initial booking. Alternatively, you may book activities with our team during your stay at the lodge.

What you and your family will enjoy during your stay is limited only by your imagination, and here is a sneak peek at what awaits you at The Farm at Cape Kidnappers.

Wool World

Let the Hawke's Bay take you back to the rustic charm and the unique character of life on a working farm in New Zealand. This live farming show is performed in and around the historic Clifton Station Woolshed. Get in amongst the pet sheep, learn about the different breeds of sheep, experience milking a cow and get acquainted with a pet "Captain Cooker" pig. Wool World also offers the wool and shearing show, where visitors can watch sheep getting shorn using modern and historical ways of shearing. You can also see sheep dog and wood chopping demonstrations.

Arataki Honey

Tucked away in beautiful rural Havelock North lies Arataki Honey, home to thousands of bees. Inside, you are able to see what the bees get up to in their colourful hives that are dotted around Hawke's Bay Wine Country.  This bright, innovative centre offers a truly inactive, self paced learning experience that children of any age will have delight in.

Smell – the sweet aromas of the honey / beeswax / propolis
Feel – the heat generated by the honey bees themselves
See – the worker bees up close in the giant hive threate
Discover – the honey bees world under microscopes
Taste – the range of nine different native & pastoral honeys

There is also a section with puzzles, story books and dress ups.

The live bee wall gives children the chance to watch the worker bees up close doing the waggle dance, after returning from their ventures into the wild, foraging for pollen & nectar. Watch them doing the house cleaning or feeding the young. Be facinated as you watch bees hatching or the Queen laying.

The bees are busy all year round, so there is always action in the hives. The team at the centre is always on hand to help out with spotting the Queen or to answer any questions that you have about honey or the honey bee! The centre is open 7 days a week from 9.00am - 5.00pm. You are welcome to explore the interactive facility, taste a range of delicious honey and honey products and learn about the fascinating life of the honey bee.

Set next door to Birdwoods Gallery, The Summer Sweet Shop is a single-room colonial cottage built from reclaimed materials. Step inside and take a step back in time – there’s a vintage cash register that goes ‘ding’, lots of special old tins, baker’s scales, teddy bears, bunting and, of course, rows and rows of sweet jars.

More than 40 varieties of old fashioned boiled sweets… bullseyes, humbugs, cola rollers, granny mints, acid drops, aniseed balls and lots more are on display...

Home-made fudge, fizzy sherbet and lemonade. Nougats, liquorice, chocolate, hokey pokey, novelties and a treasure trove of pick and mix.  Scrumptious Rush Munroe ice creams in cones or cups.  Plus lots of sugar free, guilt free sweets as well. Fill a tin, fill a jar, or just fill your tummy!

Sit in the shade under an umbrella at one of the tables in the front garden to eat your ice cream and then have a quick hopscotch competition or take your photo in the hilarious Carnival Cut-out Frame.  The Summer Sweet Shop is open 7 days a week 10.00am - 4.00pm during the school holidays and every Saturday and Sunday throughout the year.
