How it all began

In 1995, Julian Robertson travelled to New Zealand to look over and purchase a working sheep farm near the Bay of Islands in the North Island. Over the next six years the Kauri Cliffs championship golf course and The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs would be developed and opened.

Kauri Cliffs opened in 2001 and within a year would be named among the top resorts in the world by Andrew Harper, Conde Nast Traveler, Golf Digest and Tatler Magazine.

It was a busy period for the Robertson’s who also purchased another farm in 2001, this time in the stunning Hawke's Bay on the east coast of the North Island.  It too would go on to become the site of a championship golf course, this time designed by Tom Doak.  Following soon after was a second luxury lodge, with The Farm at Cape Kidnappers opening to guests in 2007.

In late 2009, the family bought the third piece in their New Zealand collection – Matakauri Lodge. Just outside of the South Island adventure capital Queenstown, Matakauri Lodge was fully renovated before being reopened in 2010.
